Lower Big Blue NRD 2008 Tree Program News Release
The Lower Big Blue NRD is accepting orders for trees to be planted in the spring of 2008. These low-cost seedling trees are made available for the planting of farm and livestock windbreaks, wildlife habitat, living snow fences, and other multipurpose plantings.
The cost of trees is $0.70 per tree, with payment due upon placement of the tree order. Orders must be in multiples of 25 per species. Hand-plant orders will be charged an additional $2.00 for packaging and handling.
The NRD provides tilling and planting services for those landowners who have 200 or more trees to plant. The cost for tilling is $25/tractor hour, with a minimum charge of $50. The cost of planting is $1.00 per tree.
The NRD 2008 tree program is offering 43 hardwoods and shrubs, and 9 evergreens. Some species of trees are in short supply, so it is important to place your order as soon as possible. The district also has tree protectors and weed barrier squares for sale.
Remember, the best time to plant a windbreak was 20 years ago--the next best time to begin is today. Contact your local NRCS office in Beatrice, Wilber, Fairbury, or Pawnee City or contact the Lower Big Blue NRD.
